The existing stocks of coral snake antivenom finally expire at the end of this month. Wyeth shut down production of coral snake antivenom in 2003 after building up a five-year stockpile. The FDA extended the expiration date in 2008 and 2009. In 30 days there will be no coral snake antivenom in the US.
Medical technology has come a long way since 2003. With all the smart people and fancy equipment we have scattered around the State of Florida, how hard could it be to produce this stuff? Antivenom production is a pretty well-known technology.
I have a buddy who sees one or two coral snakes around his South Florida home every month. It’s only a matter of time until a Floridian dies due to a lack of antivenom.
