Scientists at the new Scaffolds and Bioartificial Organs for Transplantation (SABIO) center at Gregorio Marañón hospital in Madrid aim to “regenerate” a heart and transplant it into a human within five years.
SABIO uses donated organs which are unsuitable for direct transplantation as “host organs.” All cell content is first removed from the host organ, leaving only the collagen framework. Then stem cells from the recipient are used to re-grow a new organ around the donated “structure.”
Click here for the coverage from Spain. This reminds me of the recent news out of Wake Forest University which grew a 1″ liver.
